In The Grand Duke, a theatrical troupe in the German duchy of Pfennig-Halbpfennig conspires to overthrow the miserly Grand Duke Rudolph. When the leading actor, Ludwig, accidentally exposes the plot, the troupe’s notary proposes a “statutory duel” — a legal game of cards where the loser is declared dead and the winner assumes his identity. Ludwig “kills” his manager Ernest and later tricks the Grand Duke into another such duel, becoming ruler himself. His reign quickly descends into comic chaos as multiple women, including the Duke’s fiancée and a princess, all claim him as husband. Finally, a legal quirk reveals that Ludwig misplayed the duel and was never Grand Duke at all. The law lapses, everyone is revived, and the tangled romances resolve happily.
